September 2, 2021 -- Downers Grove South High School will host a “Celebration of Life” event for longtime teacher and volunteer Jim Mizener on Saturday, September 11 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Outdoor Stadium at the school, which is located at 1436 Norfolk Street in Downers Grove, Illinois.
Mizener started teaching at South High as a drafting/architecture teacher in 1965. Over the next 55 years he served as a teacher, department chair and public announcer for hundreds of sporting events. He earned the nickname “Voice of the Mustangs” and was a positive force in the lives of many students, staff and community members.
“Jim was a fixture at South High and his impact will resonate forever,” said Ed Schwartz, principal of South High. “He cared deeply and worked hard to make everyone feel special and that they belonged in our school community.”
Following a brief tribute at 2:15 p.m., community members can view mementos and learn more about Mizener’s impact and sign a guest book. Members of the Mizener family will be present to share memories of Jim’s life with the community until 5 p.m.
Prior to the celebration for Mizener, South High will be holding a dedication and open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to mark the completion of the Master Facility Plan; view more details.
