Ed Schwartz, principal of South High School in Downers Grove, has received the Illinois Directors of Student Activities (IDSA) Principals Recognition Award for the 2021-22 school year. The award recognizes “amazing, dynamic, creative” leaders who “play an active role in promoting the culture and climate” of their school community. The Principals Recognition Award further recognizes a principal’s participation, support and commitment to student activities.
“Everything Ed does as principal is centered on students and their experience and growth,” Superintendent Dr. Hank Thiele said. “Ed has contributed greatly to supporting and encouraging students to become active in school activities and programs, and so he is very deserving of this recognition from IDSA.”
“Ed is the biggest cheerleader we have here at DGS, and he can always be seen applauding the contributions and accomplishments of our students who are involved in activities,” said Jennifer Martinez, director of student activities at DGS. “We teach our students to leave DGS better than they found it, and Ed is definitely doing just that.”
Schwartz is in his eighth and final year as principal and will retire in June. He has worked in education for 33 years, serving in almost every role there is to serve at a large high school–from math teacher to dean to coach to administrator.
