After an extensive search that included student, staff and family input, District 99 has named a new associate principal for athletics. The Board of Education approved hiring Thomas Freyer, who will start in the new role on July 1, 2022, at its meeting tonight. Freyer will replace Randy Konstans, who is retiring at the end of the school year.
Freyer has worked as an administrator at Carl Sandburg High School since 2016, currently serving as a math/business division chair and previously as athletic director. He was also a math teacher at Lyons Township High School for eight years. He began his teaching career at a high school in Pukalani, Hawaii, on the island of Maui, teaching math and coaching baseball.
“Tom’s breadth of well-rounded experiences will serve him well as both the leader of our athletics program and as a holistic building leader,” said Arwen Lyp, the incoming South High principal who will replace Ed Schwartz in July. The athletic director position has been changed to an associate principal position in order to include more responsibilities related to academics.
“I’m excited at the opportunity to become the first associate principal of athletics at South High, a school known for outstanding academic and athletic programs,” said Freyer. “My mission will be to ensure that our student-athletes and all students have a positive experience during their time at DGS.”
Freyer holds a Bachelor of Science in finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and holds both a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in mathematics and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership. He lives in Mokena with his wife and young son and daughter.
