On Monday, February 5, State Representative David S. Olsen presented Governor Rauner’s recent proclamation at South High in Downers Grove, which proclaims February 5-9, 2018 as School Counselors Week in Illinois.
Aligning with National School Counselors Week, DGS School Counselors gathered in the Career and Technical Education Center to celebrate this occasion.
At the ceremony, Representative Olsen, South High ‘07 alum, reflected on his counselor who positively impacted his future career path.
“It’s wonderful that our state leaders took the time to recognize the importance and impact that counselors make each and every day,” said Vince Walsh-Rock, assistant principal for Student Support Services at South High. Walsh-Rock also serves as president of the Illinois School Counselor Association.
The proclamation reads as follows:
WHEREAS, school counselors are employed in public and private schools to help students reach their full potential; and,
WHEREAS, school counselors are actively committed to helping students explore their abilities, strengths, interests and talents as these traits relate to career awareness and development; and,
WHEREAS, school counselors help parents focus on ways to further the educational, personal and social growth of their children; and,
WHEREAS, school counselors work with teachers and other educators to help students explore their potentials and set realistic goals for themselves; and,
WHEREAS, school counselors seek to identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and complement comprehensive school counseling programs and help students become productive members of society; and,
WHEREAS, excellent school counselors often provide the sort of encouraging, supportive guidance that makes the difference between enthusiastic effort and apathy;
THEREFORE, I, Bruce Rauner, Governor of the State of Illinois, do hereby proclaim February 5-9, 2018, as SCHOOL COUNSELORS WEEK in Illinois.
