Principal Schwartz's Address at Open House

Message from Principal Schwartz:

"As I shared via email today, late this morning, a member of our custodial staff found a bullet on the floor of one of the boys’ bathrooms. There were no other items in the area and no one else in the room at the time. The custodian immediately reported the finding to our school resource officer who contacted his superiors at the Downers Grove Police Department. Working with them and considering all of the information we had, we decided to continue classes without interruption.  Hallway cameras near the restroom were used to identify all of the students who were in the area of the restroom. Our deans spoke with all of these students and searched their belongings and lockers. Nothing was found. Additionally, we had an increased presence of police in and around the building for the remainder of the day.

Because we were continuing with classes, I asked our teachers to talk to their students about this situation, and about school safety in general. The message that I asked them to deliver, and that I ask that you reiterate with your students, is this: Every person in this building is responsible for building safety. If anyone ever sees or hears anything that could potentially compromise the safety of our school, they need to report it to an adult immediately.

I want you to know that I feel very confident in the safety of our school.  I feel that way because of the way that students, staff, and families work together for the betterment of our kids. Thank you for your ongoing efforts – your presence here tonight speaks to your investment in our joint efforts."
