South High physics students took a trip to the College of DuPage on Friday, April 29 to participate in the COD Engineering Club’s “Engineering Olympics.” Our students competed in several “design and build” activities as well as science trivia and puzzle contests.

Matthew Campbell, Jesse Knight, Kristina Mucha, Daniel Piccoli and Vishal Sorakayala took home the 2nd place trophy. The student engineers designed and built a tall spire that withstood the raging wind generated by a fan, a wind turbine, and a helium blimp that floated across the room.

“When our students participate in these types of real-world problem solving projects, it generates excitement and enthusiasm for science.” says Karen Eder, DGS science department head. “Thank you to the COD Engineering Club for hosting this fantastic event, and for reminding us that engineering is fun!”

In addition to the 2nd place winners, the following students attended the event: Jakub Wisniewski, Raymond Liu, Phillip Jedralski, Luke McGrath, Kevin Fera, Adam Zlotnicki, Chandana Sooranahalli, Emilia Kaszyk and Lydia Walsh-Rock.
