ACTIVITIES

National Hispanic Heritage month is happening from September 15th to October 15th, and Spanish Club would like to take one day of each week to honor an influential Hispanic American.  This week, we will honor Ellen Ochoa, who was the world’s first female Hispanic astronaut. She received her masters of science and doctorates from Stanford University and in 1990 was selected by NASA. In 1993, she embarked on her first mission which was a 9-day trip on the space shuttle Discovery. Since then, she has been on 3 more space flights and logged a total of nearly 1,000 hours in space. In 2013 she became the first Hispanic and second female ever to be named director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, a position which she still holds today.
