Mayors Declare May 22 as “The Class of 2020 Day”

Community Invited to Celebrate Downers Grove High School Graduates!

May 18, 2020  -- Downers Grove, Ill. -- Mayors from Downers Grove, Woodridge, Lisle and Darien have declared Friday, May 22, 2020 as “The Class of 2020 Day” to commemorate graduates of Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School. On May 22 at 20:20 (8:20 p.m.), residents are invited to give a “20-Second Cheer” for the graduates.

May 22, 2020 marks the 91st graduation day for North High and the 54th graduation day for South High in Downers Grove. To celebrate the 1,211 students who would have graduated in a traditional ceremony on this day, residents are invited to cheer as well as tie blue and/or purple ribbons on their trees.

“All students have been impacted by the pandemic, but most of all our senior students, who are missing numerous traditional in-person festivities and celebrations,” says Ed Schwartz, principal of South High. “Although nothing can replace these events, we thought this social distancing event might be something fun, and we appreciate the support of our mayors.”

“I have been so impressed by how our communities have supported the Class of 2020, and I hope everyone will unite on May 22 for this fun event. However people want to cheer, whether shouting words of encouragement, honking car horns in their driveway or banging pots and pans, it would be wonderful to hear a lot of people participating and showing their support,” says Janice Schwarze, principal of North High.
