On Thursday, May 26, Downers Grove North High and South High Schools unveiled their newly created Memorial Peace Gardens with separate 45-minute dedication ceremonies.
Since Downers Grove High School first opened in 1928, over 80 young men who have attended District 99 schools have lost their lives in the line of service to the United States of America. Both schools held fundraisers throughout the 2015-16 school year, generating the $50,000 toward an overall $100,000 budget that was needed to build the permanent memorials to honor these distinguished alumni. Grant and Power Landscaping, LaFarge North America, and Stonecrafters Granite and Marble all donated significantly to each Garden to include extensive stonework, granite stones bearing the names of all men who lost their lives, copper lighting, iron benches and permanent sculptures inscribed with the phrase: “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight different languages. Countless other large donors, including the Gilbert Foundation, will be included in commemorative plaques at both schools to recognize their significant support.
“When we walk through the hallways of our schools today, we see countless recognitions honoring student accomplishments in academics, athletics and activities—but none for our fallen heroes,” says Christopher Esposito, social studies department chair at South High. “We want to extend our deep gratitude to everyone in our community who so generously supported the creation of the Gardens.”
“These memorials will educate our young people in a lasting way to honor and respect the ultimate sacrifice, and to remind us and all future generations how important it is to work toward peaceful solutions,” says Jenne Dehmlow, social studies department chair at North High. “Our hope is that these Gardens will be a living classroom every day where we can all continue to learn, grow and remember.”
Members of the Military Honor Guard opened the dedications with a “Presentation of Colors.” Local Veterans representing World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and Modern Era conflicts participated in an official wreath laying, a floral tribute that signifies the brevity of life and memories of other days. District 99 student musicians performed the National Anthem, Taps and “What a Wonderful World,” by Louis Armstrong. Special guests included members from the Bessa, Gilbert and Stevenson families, all former District 99 families who lost their sons to war. Local dignitaries were also in attendance.
