Students from both Downers Grove North High School and Downers Grove South High School received over 150 Regional Scholastic Art Awards. The judging was held at North High, and 1,053 student artists from 30 area schools submitted 2,894 works of art for adjudication. The winning artwork, including pieces from the entire region, will be unveiled at the Exhibition Opening and Artists Reception on Sunday, February 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. at North High’s Main Street Lobby, 4436 Main Street in Downers Grove. The public is welcome to attend. The Scholastic Art Show Regional Exhibition will continue February 8-12 during school hours.
About 10 percent of all works submitted received awards in each designation, including Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention. All Gold Key winners will move forward in the National Scholastic adjudication and winners will be announced in March.
North High student artists won 87 awards, including one American Vision Award (Best of Show), 34 Gold Key Awards, 27 Silver Key Awards, and 25 Honorable Mention Awards. At South High, 30 South student artists merited 67 awards, including 29 Gold Key Awards, 21 Silver Key Awards, and 17 Honorable Mention Awards.
“We are exceedingly proud of both the process followed by our student artists, and of the products they all create,” said Glenn Williams, Fine Arts Department Chairman at South High. “Scholastic Art Awards represent a high point of artistic achievement for a high school visual artist.”
“We are very excited to host the regional exhibition at North High,” said Brayer Teague, Fine Arts Department Chairman. “This show is always an amazing display of student creativity and a testament to the wonderful art teaching that is happening in District 99.”
According to Teague, the art teachers from both North High and South High School play an important role in putting the exhibition together. “Our District 99 art teachers are the engine behind this regional affiliate of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Their dedication and tireless commitment enables student artists from all over the suburban region to have their work evaluated by professional artists.”
