ANNOUNCEMENT READ TO ALL STUDENTS
FROM PRINCIPAL JANICE SCHWARZE
JANUARY 16, 2019
Good morning, this is Mrs. Schwarze, your principal.
In the last few days, two incidents involving social media and students using the "n-word" have been brought to our attention. I understand that we as a school community are experiencing a range of emotions. While this has been a painful experience for North High, particularly for students and staff who have experienced discrimination in the past, it is also an opportunity for us to learn and grow.
One thing I want to be sure of is that everyone in the building understands that it is never okay to use the n-word. It is not uncommon to hear the word in song lyrics and some friends might even use the word between each other as a joke, but that does not in any way make using this word acceptable. It has, is, and always will be a terrible racial slur. Historically, it is a term that is hurtful; therefore, it should never be spoken or written in our school or on social media.
Please know that if a student uses this word or any other derogatory term in a way that is connected to our school environment, we will issue consequences because this behavior is disrespectful and does not at all align with our goal to be Positively North. Using respectful language with others is part of who we are and who we strive to be. I ask that each of you be mindful of the words you choose to use because words are powerful, and we should always seek to be respectful and supportive of one another.
While this has been an emotional week for many, one good thing that has come out of these incidents is that people are talking. It is only through talking to each other that we will understand each other and learn and grow. We will continue the conversation about how to support one another, especially when we have different backgrounds and experiences. We are committed to improving our school culture to ensure all people are treated with respect.
In the meantime, I ask that you look out for each other and be kind to each other. You can never go wrong with being kind, especially when discussing sensitive topics. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or any trusted adult.
Have a great day.
