Students Witness Illinois Supreme Court

On Thursday, May 19, select District 99 students had the opportunity to witness the Illinois Supreme Court in action at Benedictine University in Lisle. The Illinois Supreme Court typically hears cases in Springfield and Chicago; the one-day change in venue was part of the Court’s initiative to bring the Court to the people it serves and to continue its goal for greater transparency, according to a release. The students heard oral arguments for two cases – one criminal and one civil.

South High Social Studies Teachers Robyn Fardy, Lauren Berg, and Laura Rodey traveled with the following students: Patrick Azer, Kristen Bialek, Michaela Burton, Gisselle Cervantes, Hannah Fedor, Jessie Fortin, Josh Graves, Jenna Norwood, Ramarro Lamar, Olivia LaPointe, Vanessa Patino and Jori Tyler.

“Seeing the Illinois Supreme Court in action was a unique and rewarding experience for our students, many of whom are considering a career in law," says Social Studies Teacher Laura Rodey. "It was especially fun talking to the students ahead of time about the cases and the arguments on each side, and then seeing how the attorneys made those arguments and answered questions at oral arguments.”

North High Social Studies Teacher Keith Lichtenberg traveled with the following North High students: Daniel Brophy, Ryan Rivero, Anthony Rosario, Samantha Russ, Tanner Ryan, Rebecca Sprague and Julia Zita.

“Our students were first class as always and were engaged throughout the day,” said Lichtenberg. “These students have been active participants and leaders in our Government Club and we were proud to have them represent us.”
