Brayer Teague, fine arts department chair at Downers Grove North High School, has been named a semifinalist for a “Music Educator Award,” which is presented by The Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. He is the only educator from Illinois and one of only 25 educators nationwide who has been named a semifinalist. He was selected as one of 213 quarterfinalists last May. Over 4,500 nominations were submitted for the award, which recognizes elementary, middle school, high school and college educators “who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education.”
“Brayer is a tremendous talent in our school—musically, artistically and as a leader of staff and students alike—so it’s wonderful that he is receiving this well-deserved national recognition,” says North High Principal Scott Kasik. “He and the team of teachers he leads are the reasons for the success of our music and art programs at North High, and we are incredibly proud of him.”
“I was honored and humbled to have been nominated by one of my students for this award,” says Teague. “It’s exciting to be recognized by the Grammy Foundation because this particular award truly promotes the core belief I hold dearly, that music can make a positive difference in young people’s lives.”
Ten finalists, who will receive a $1,000 honorarium and matching grants for their schools, will be announced in December. A winner will be flown to Los Angeles during Grammy Week in February to accept the award, attend the ceremony and receive a $10,000 honorarium.
